What is Discoid Lupus?

Discoid Lupus, or Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE), is a form of Lupus that is limited to the skin. Unlike Systemic Lupus, which can affect any part of the body, internal or external, Discoid Lupus exists solely on the cutaneous, or superficial layer of the body.

It is the most common chronic form of cutaneous lupus, and “is characterized by persistent scaly, disk-like plaques on scalp, face, and ears that may cause pigmentary changes, scarring, and hair loss.” With DLE, an infected individual can get rashes that do not go away. Discoid Lupus accounts for about 10% of all Lupus cases.

Although the cause of DLE is unknown, there are factors can lead to it, including:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Exposure to sunlight
  • Toxins such as cigarette smoke
  • Hormones

DLE can affect both males and females of any age but is five times more common in females than males. Typically it occurs between the ages of 20 and 40 years and is more common and severe in smokers versus non-smokers. Approximately 10 percent of people who have Discoid Lupus will develop the more severe Systemic Lupus. It is commonly thought, however, that these people already had Systemic Lupus with only a prevailing symptom of a skin rash.

Can I Get Life Insurance With Discoid Lupus?

Life insurance with Discoid Lupus is usually easier to obtain than life insurance with Systemic Lupus because it only affects the outermost layer of the skin. If your DLE is mild and your overall health is good, the best rating you can expect to receive is Standard. In order to qualify for this, you must also confirm that Systemic Lupus has been ruled out. If the diagnosis of Discoid Lupus is within one year, you can expect a Table 2 rating.

Depending on how you treat your Discoid Lupus, your rate may vary.

  • If you take a low dose of oral steroids (less than 15mg per day) – Add 1 table rating
  • If you take a high dose of oral steroids (more than 15mg per day) – DECLINE

In life insurance, a “table rating” is the life insurance premium that is charged to people who cannot qualify for standard rates. Clients with DLE fall into this category. Each numerical table increase is usually a 25% increase over the standard risk class rates. If you do take a low dose of oral steroids daily, you can expect to add 25% to the Standard rate.

What Do You Need To Know About My Discoid Lupus?

Life insurance carriers are concerned about how you’ve kept your DLE under control, as well as your overall health. When you are ready to speak with an agent about life insurance, it’s best to have the following information ready:

  • The date you were diagnosed
  • What your exact diagnosis was
  • Your age at diagnosis
  • The severity of your DLE
  • What treatments you’ve taken
  • The response to treatment
  • Any other medical conditions present
  • If you are a tobacco user

You should note, that the type and condition of your Discoid Lupus are not the only factors that are taken into account when a carrier looks at your application. They are also going to want a good idea of your overall health, including weight, heart rate, blood pressure, diet, and exercise habits.

How Can I Get The Best Insurance Rate For Discoid Lupus?

Before applying for life insurance, there are several important steps you can take to increase your chances of getting approved at the best rate class possible. We strongly recommend you prepare the following:

  • All of your doctors’ names, addresses, and phone numbers
  • Have a list of the answered questions from above
  • Prepare a list of all medications, their dosages, and frequency of use

In addition to coming prepared for your call, there are overall factors that can improve the outcome for DLE clients. Some things to consider are:

  • It is best to apply when your DLE has been in remission for at least six months
  • Maintain a healthy and consistent diet and exercise regimen to keep your blood pressure low
  • Follow up with your doctor on a regular basis
  • Remember that premiums will be lower for non-smokers versus smokers (time to kick the habit!)
  • Always work to manage your condition and not let it simply run your life
